The Joy-Cons lack many of the benefits the Pro Controllers have. They work fine, but put two equally matched opponents up against each other in games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or Dragon Ball FighterZ — one using a Pro controller and the other on Joy-Cons — and the Pro Controller user will have the edge. Using the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller in these situations is a bit more difficult, but still possible – you’ll just need some different tools to get the job done. First off, the easy option.

How to use a generic controller for PPSSPP?
Hi guys! First of all, this is an amazing product. I will eventually buy the Gold version if I get the ins and outs of it. This is my first time to try this with a controller. I bought a controller earlier today and was wondering how to use it for the PPSSPP. Yes, I have googled but I haven't found any solution. The pc reads my controller but the PPSSPP couldn't. Please help me. Thank you guys

It could be wise to tell us the model of your gamepad, maybe the devs will work for making it compatible with PPSSPP. In the meantime you can use some wrapper library like this in order to let think the emu that you are using an xobx36 gamepad (although take note that I've not tested this), or use some keyboard simulator like xpadder.
Since English is not my first language sorry for some misspelling on my posts

It's a generic one that looks like a dual shock playstation 2 controller.

RE: How to use a generic controller for PPSSPP?
It depends on which ppsspp version you use.
The versions on which Option=>Controls work you don't need to do anything
On version Options=>Controls don't work, you have to go to(screen menus)System=>Controls=>left to page 3(Pad) and enable 'mapping active'
If it doesn't work,go to Control Panel=>Game Controllers=>Advanced=>make sure the controller is selected
